Doctor Who: the Web Planet

Originally broadcast in 1965 during the middle of Doctor Who‘s second season, The Web Planet is one my favorite First Doctor stories. William Hartnell shines as the crotchety, yet lovable old time traveler. William Russell, Jacqueline Hill and Maureen O’Brien play the Doctor’s traveling companions, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright and Vicki. Originally titled The Zarbi, this six-part story was broadcast by the BBC from February 13th through March 30th, 1965.

The Doctor’s TARDIS is seized by a mysterious force and brought to a planet called Vortis. Here, the time travelers get caught up in the struggles of the Menoptra, a moth-like race, as they fight to regain control of Vortis–originally their home–from an alien parasite. The Animus (voiced by Catherine Fleming) has invaded the planet and taken control of the Zarbi, an ant-like race. Once docile, the Zarbi have been turned into vicious automatons who enforce their master’s will using organic venom guns.

The Doctor and his companions join forces with the Menoptra and the underground-dwelling Optra to confront the Animus and free the Zarbi from its control and release the TARDIS from its influence. Fleming gives a delightfully villainous performance as the voice of the Animus, and director Richard Martin manages to get great performances from many of his principal and supporting cast for this six-part adventure. The script is well-written by Bill Strutton. The Web Planet was Strutton’s only involvement with Doctor Who.

While it may seem silly or even cheesy by today’s standards, The Web Planet was quite imaginative and ambitious for its day. This story is in that the Doctor and his companions are the only humanoid characters seen here. The rest are all insect-like, and then there is the Animus, which is more akin to an arachnid-a spider, to be more precise-lurking at the heart of its web.

This DVD has some great code features, including the commentary track with actors William Russell and Martin Jarvis, along with producer Verity Lambert. Also included is the featurette “Tales of Isop,” featuring interviews with William Russell, Martin Jarvis, and Maureen O’Brien along with many other members of the cast and crew. Other features include a photo gallery, pop-up production notes, a 1960′s film strip show based on The Web Planet called “Give-A-Show,” and the 56-minute audio production The Lair of Zarbi Supremo, a short story read by William Russell. There is also a Spanish soundtrack option for Episode Six. The Web Planet is a great story from the First Doctor era, and this is an excellent DVD package for such a fascinating adventure.

Build a Cheap Chicken Coop With a Limited Budget

A few years ago I was prescribed a drug that I never had heard of before called Ultram (generic version tramadol hydrocloride) for lower back pain. I had injured my back at work and was taking some of the narcotic drugs for several months when I noticed that I started becoming a dependent on them. I consulted my and informed him that I was worried about becoming addicted to these and to see if he knew another medication that was not so dependency forming. He recommended to me Ultram and gave me some basic background on it. In simple terms, he explained to me that Ultram was not habit forming and contained no narcotics in it. He said that the drug worked by increasing the level of serotinin in the bloodstream thereby lessening the feelings of pain in the body.

So, I thought what the hell, let’s give it a shot…I mean it is not addictive so what is the harm, right? My physician wrote me out a scipt for 90 pills and told me to take one pill three times daily for pain. When I first started using the drug it really did not seem to do too much at all for my lower back pain. I continued to take the medication though untilt my next followup visit to my doctor’s about a month later. I informed him that the Utlram was not really giving me any relief from the pain and It hardly felt like the pill was at all effective. He increased my doage to 2 pills 4 times daily and wrote me a script for 180 pills. I explained to him that I did not like the idea of taking that many pills every day for a prolonged period of time. (I had been having this pain for approximately 6 months now). He again convinced me that the drug was not addictive and was actually much better for me to be on than the narcotics I was on before.

After starting the 2 pills 4X daily routine, I started to get some good relief from the back pain. Now, do not get me wrong, I had to continously take the pills every 6 hours or the pain would come right back but the 2 pills would definitely help relieve nearly all of the when I was in pain. So I pretty much kept up this routine for approximately another 6 months or so when I started to do some physical therapy with another doctor. The physical therapy seemed to be really helping so I started to lessen my intake of the ultram when the nightmare really started.

Let me just say that I have never been sicker any time in my life than when I went to go off this drug. At first I just stopped taking it all together but I felt so sick that I had forced myself to actually take a few to stop feeling so damn awful. I had the worst nasueas stomach when I would try and go cold turkey in a given day and would constantly be gagging as if I was going to throwup any minute. Another thing was that I could not sleep whatsoever and constantly had an aching feeling in my arms and legs. Evidently ultram has a tendency to disturb your sleep rythyms and my body had become dependent on having them in my system to fall asleep. There is nothing worse than feeling like death and then not being able even to sleep it off. After trying to go cold turkey several times over a few weeks, I decided the only way I was going to get off of these things was to gradually lessen my dose and ween myself off of them. It ended up taking me about a good month where I could go a day without having to take any. I would still feel down and exhausted all day and usually the next day afterwards but I was just glad to not be taking these anymore. It really took me about a month and half before I could really that I was totally through with these pills.

It has now been several years since I was using Ultram and I can honestly say, it was the worst thing I have ever been through with trying to stop taking these. I should also mention that I had a long conversation with my and really laid him out about not knowing enough about this drug before putting people on it. Funny thing was he actually acted surprised until I showed him several articles in medical journals that I had researched over the past few months. They all claimed just how addicitve ultram can be with several researchers saying it was more addictive than most narcotics. Anyway, I am with a new doctor these days and knock on wood I had any back pain for 4 years now. I am confident enough now to realize the next time I am in pain, I am going to research any drug I get proscribed first before taking—-I think I have learned my lesson.

Build a Cheap Chicken Coop With a Limited Budget All around the world people are looking to keep chickens in their backyards. But when just starting out most people encounter the same problem, purchasing a coop to keep their chickens can come at a pretty high cost. The majority of us can’t afford to throw money away in these current difficult times so we are all looking at cheap options for everything – including chicken coops and runs. The good news is that I’ve found a way of building your chicken coop while keeping the costs within any budget. So now for a fraction of the cost of buying a coop you can build your own.

I know what you’re thinking, it’s going to take a lot of work to build a chicken coop, and you’d be right. It does take a lot of work, but it is FUN work, and the rewards are worth it. You’ll have your own coop customised to your needs, you’ll be saving a lot of money too. Building you own chicken coop will cost around half the cost of purchasing a pre-built coop. So if you want to save money and you’re up for a challenge then you need to consider building your own cheap chicken coop.

How can you get started? Well you need to decide how many chickens you’re going to house in your coop, obviously. The more chickens, then obviously the bigger the coop is going to be. When it is time you can grab a resource that will guide you through the whole process of building your own hen house. These guides are relatively inexpensive when you pick them up from the Internet.

Once you have a guide, then it’s just a trip to the store to get the necessary materials. The good news is that usually the good chicken coop guides will tell you exactly what you need. AND they’ll tell you exactly how to go about building it… the whole process, from the first screw to the last. It doesn’t get any better than that.

If you’re still not sold on the idea of building your own coop, then here’s something that might. The general cost. If you bought a medium sized coop that is pre-built then you could expect to pay anywhere from $800 to $2000, but if you built a medium sized coop instead, then you’re looking at purchasing the required materials for $400! Plus the cost of the guide, $30. Total cost = $430. If that takes your fancy then pick up the required chicken coop guide, purchase the materials and build your own customised chicken coop.

These are just some pointers I have learned over my years of raising hens and building chicken coops and runs. For more information of what to do to make building your chicken coops as much fun as possible then drop by my site by

Some Exciting Birthday Gift Ideas

It's beautiful snow begins to fall, and there is nothing more magical in the winter. It's cold, of course, but also brings hugs and family time. One of the things the winter can be wrong if their animals, especially horses. Did you know that horses can have many more health problems in the winter than at any other time of year? Why is this, as the temperature drops a horse tends to get sick faster, especially if they have no protection? Some of the major health problems can have a horse listed below with descriptions and ways to try to prevent them. Colic What, you ask? Well, it's a pain in the stomach, which does not always happen in the winter, but horses are most susceptible below. Not so much stomach pain, is how the horse reacts to have colic. Do not eat, they tend to lye down and keep getting, trying to ease the pain. If the pain is more intense, some roll and thrash violently. That will begin in the womb and gnashing of teeth. If your horse has any of these symptoms, call your vet immediately, they need serious medical help. Wondering why you can get colic, or how they could have gotten? Important factors are associated with colic in a horse. Are listed below …. Dehydration and winter and cools, the horses do not really care to drink cold water, especially if frozen. They can not get enough nutrients from the snow, so when you actually drink your body temperature starts to drop. Then the body has to work twice as hard to produce heat. When a horse is hydrated intestines are the first thing affected. This in turn can cause extreme pain if you do not want your horse to get dehydrated in the winter, put a bowl of warm water in the barn. Or fill their water channels a few times a day with warm water. Boosters-When it's cold outside everyone likes hot food or hay. This is the problem with excess supply in the winter, people think from cold to feed the horses. This can lead to a number of problems. When food is eaten to quickly can cause problems such as colic or laminitis, maybe both. If you need to eat more, eat more hay is of better quality. Or try to feed them three times a day. Poor Hay-horses can not tolerate eating weeds and stems mixed with hay. They can not digest it, and some animals. A horse blanket can do the trick that you can raise the body temperature of a horse, that can fight infection. Give your horse extra TLC, they have feelings and if they can overcome mime faster. If we neglect them, leave them outside, do not take them to the vet, and treat them like dirt. Then maybe you should ask yourself whether you should own a horse. Pneumonia is a potentially fatal disease live if not treated immediately, the result can be death. Here's a thousand dollars from his pocket.

Some Exciting Birthday Gift Ideas Buying original birthday gifts can be difficult – there is so much to choose from that shopping can be lengthy and tiresome – so a few ideas for birthday presents may be of help. In general, birthday gifts can be in one of three categories – something you need, something you want, and the novelty. Here we look at a few birthday gift ideas covering each of those categories.

Things you need

Often thought of as the poor relation in gifts, the truth is that buying somebody an item that they need is a bonus as it means they don’t have to search for it themselves. The range of gifts in this category can be vast, from toiletries and perfumes – always great gifts for young and older girls, aunts and grandma’s – to wallets and cufflinks, traditional and much appreciated gifts for the birthday boy or man.

In the realms of clothing it is best to steer away from items that need specific sizes in case you are unaware of the correct ones, and stick to the likes of gloves (for both men and women a wise choice) and the likes of ties and scarves.

If you know of something the recipient needs – a replacement item they have recently broken, for instance – then this can make a very fine gift indeed, as replacement items are always welcome.

Things you want

Wants and needs are different things, with the latter being necessities and the former primarily luxuries. If there is something you know is wanted – it may be the latest CD or film, or a bag or other item – this can be a good way of deciding on a birthday gift.

Alternatively you may be aware of something they like – a watch, maybe, or some other jewellery – and set about buying them that special something that they will be sure to appreciate.

The better you known the person concerned, the better the choice of present that you will be able to choose for them as you will be aware of their likes and loves. Giving someone something they really appreciate is a great feeling, and goes both ways.

Novelty items

Choosing to give someone a novelty gift can be a risk if you don’t know them too well, so this is an option that should be considered for the best of friends and close family, particularly those whose sense of humour is well regarded and understood!

Novelty gifts range from the gimmicky – useless items that perform a function that is not at all necessary – to the humorous, such as cups with funny slogans printed on them and similar items.

Giving novelty gifts is a good way of breaking the ice, and can lighten up an occasion that the recipient may feel embarrassed or reluctant to celebrate – a 50th, for instance – by taking away the serious nature of the occasion.

Whatever it is you choose to give, these birthday gift ideas are simply a few of the many that can be found, and whether you shop on line or on the high street you will be able to add your own ideas to the above.

I’m pretty proud of the time considering I haven’t ran in two weeks. But I am not about to tell you the run was cake because it was pretty tough. I could definitely tell I had taken a prolonged break, but I do not think it will hinder my plans for my next running goal.

New Goal: 10K Training
I have exactly six weeks until the 10K Duck Race in Stuttgart. It’s the Saturday following Thanksgiving so sure I will be needing a run to cut through the pumpkin pie, turkey and the thousands of pounds of sides I will consume to start the Holiday Season.

So as of yesterday, I’ve officially began training for the 10K. My plan looks something like this:

The first three weeks (Oct. 13-Nov. 5)
3 mile runs during the weekdays (Mondays, Wednesday and/or Fridays) at least two of those per week.
4 mile run on the weekends (Saturdays or Sundays)

The last three weeks (Nov. 6- Nov. 26)
3 mile runs during the week (same as before)
5 mile runs on the weekends

And save the 6.2 miles for the actual race on Nov. 26.

It’s gonna be the longest, straightest, flatest 6.2 miles of my life. Long straights with little curves in the road. gonna be so bored. Who wants to run with me? We can sing songs. Or make up stories. Or speak about how we are gonna eat corndogs and funnel cakes from the carnival when we are finished running.

And I’ll save the 6.2 miles for the actual race on Nov. 26.

It’s gonna be the longest, straightest, flatest 6.2 miles of my life. Long straights with little curves in the road. I am gonna be so bored. Who wants to run with me? We can sing songs. Or make up stories. Or speak about how we are gonna eat corndogs and funnel cakes from the carnival when we are finished running.

How do you use a nebulizer 1. Hands should be washed thoroughly before using a nebulizer and make a thorough check that the nebulizer is absolutely clean.

2. If you are using a multi-dose bottle, a dropper should be used to give the correct dosage of medication into the cup with saline solution.

3. Then, connect the mouthpiece or mask to the T-shaped elbow. The unit should be then fastened to the cup. For children older than 2, using a mouthpiece is recommended as it will deliver more medication than a mask.

4. Connect the tube of the nebulizer to the port on the compressor.

5. Turn on the device and check the nebulizer for misting.

6. If you want to correctly use a nebulizer, it should be held up in an upright position. This will prevent spillage. However, in case you are using a handheld portable nebulizer, you can use it!it can be used in any position.

7. Check the mouthpiece is placed between your teeth and your lips are closed around it. Do not allow the mist into your eyes during the operation.

8. Breathe out at first gently and then inhale. After that, as the mist starts, it should be inhaled slowly through the mouth. The subject should hold his/her breath for up to about 10 seconds. In this way the medication has time to settle down in the airway.

9. Check to tap the side of the nebulizer to allow the medication to drop down to where it can be misted.

10. Continue to breathe from the mouthpiece until when the nebulizer starts to sputter, which will mean that it is finishing.

If you follow the above suggestions when you use a nebulizer. It will give you an effective therapy .

I have been a health insurance broker for over a decade and every day I read more and more “horror” stories that are posted on the Internet regarding health insurance companies not paying claims, refusing to cover specific illnesses and physicians not getting reimbursed for medical services. Unfortunately, insurance companies are driven by profits, not people (albeit they need people to make profits). If the insurance company can find a legal reason not to pay a claim, chances are they will find it, and you the consumer will suffer. However, what most people fail to realize is that there are very few “loopholes” in an insurance policy that give the insurance company an unfair advantage over the consumer. In fact, insurance companies go to great lengths to detail the limitations of their coverage by giving the policy holders 10-days (a 10-day free look period) to review their policy. Unfortunately, most people put their insurance cards in their wallet and place their policy in a drawer or filing cabinet during their 10-day free look and it usually isn’t until they receive a “denial” letter from the insurance company that they take their policy out to really read through it.

The majority of people, who buy their own health insurance, rely heavily on the insurance agent selling the policy to explain the plan’s coverage and benefits. This being the case, many individuals who purchase their own health insurance plan can tell you very little about their plan, other than, what they pay in premiums and how much they have to pay to satisfy their deductible.

For many consumers, purchasing a health insurance policy on their own can be an enormous undertaking. Purchasing a health insurance policy is not like buying a car, in that, the buyer knows that the engine and transmission are standard, and that power windows are optional. A health insurance plan is much more ambiguous, and it is often very difficult for the consumer to determine what type of coverage is standard and what other benefits are optional. In my opinion, this is the primary reason that most policy holders don’t realize that they do not have coverage for a specific medical treatment until they receive a large bill from the hospital stating that “benefits were denied.”

Sure, we all complain about insurance companies, but we do know that they serve a “necessary evil.” And, even though purchasing health insurance may be a frustrating, daunting and time consuming task, there are certain things that you can do as a consumer to ensure that you are purchasing the type of health insurance coverage you really need at a fair price.

Dealing with small business owners and the self-employed market, I have come to the realization that it is extremely difficult for people to distinguish between the type of health insurance coverage that they “want” and the benefits they really “need.” Recently, I have read various comments on different Blogs advocating health plans that offer 100% coverage (no deductible and no-coinsurance) and, although I agree that those types of plans have a great “curb appeal,” I can tell you from personal experience that these plans are not for everyone. Do 100% health plans offer the policy holder greater peace of mind? Probably. But is a 100% health insurance plan something that most consumers really need? Probably not! In my professional opinion, when you purchase a health insurance plan, you must achieve a balance between four important variables; wants, needs, risk and price. Just like you would do if you were purchasing options for a new car, you have to weigh all these variables before you spend your money. If you are healthy, take no medications and rarely go to the doctor, do you really need a 100% plan with a $5 co-payment for prescription drugs if it costs you $300 dollars more a month?

Is it worth $200 more a month to have a $250 deductible and a $20 brand name/$10 generic Rx co-pay versus an 80/20 plan with a $2,500 deductible that also offers a $20 brand name/$10generic co-pay after you pay a once a year $100 Rx deductible? Wouldn’t the 80/20 plan still offer you adequate coverage? Don’t you think it would be better to put that extra $200 ($2,400 per year) in your bank account, just in case you may have to pay your $2,500 deductible or buy a $12 Amoxicillin prescription? Isn’t it wiser to keep your hard-earned money rather than pay higher premiums to an insurance company?

Yes, there are many ways you can keep more of the money that you would normally give to an insurance company in the form of higher monthly premiums. For example, the federal government encourages consumers to purchase H.S.A. (Health Savings Account) qualified H.D.H.P.’s (High Deductible Health Plans) so they have more control over how their health care dollars are spent. Consumers who purchase an HSA Qualified H.D.H.P. can put extra money aside each year in an interest bearing account so they can use that money to pay for out-of-pocket medical expenses. Even procedures that are not normally covered by insurance companies, like Lasik eye surgery, orthodontics, and alternative medicines become 100% tax deductible. If there are no claims that year the money that was deposited into the tax deferred H.S.A can be rolled over to the next year earning an even higher rate of interest. If there are no significant claims for several years (as is often the case) the insured ends up building a sizeable account that enjoys similar tax benefits as a traditional I.R.A. Most H.S.A. administrators now offer thousands of no load mutual funds to transfer your H.S.A. funds into so you can potentially earn an even higher rate of interest.

In my experience, I believe that individuals who purchase their health plan based on wants rather than needs feel the most defrauded or “ripped-off” by their insurance company and/or insurance agent. In fact, I hear almost identical comments from almost every business owner that I speak to. Comments, such as, “I have to run my business, I don’t have time to be sick! “I think I have gone to the doctor 2 times in the last 5 years” and “My insurance company keeps raising my rates and I don’t even use my insurance!” As a business owner myself, I can understand their frustration. So, is there a simple formula that everyone can follow to make health insurance buying easier? Yes! Become an INFORMED consumer.

Every time I contact a prospective client or call one of my client referrals, I ask a handful of specific questions that directly relate to the policy that particular individual currently has in their filing cabinet or dresser drawer. You know the policy that they bought to protect them from having to file bankruptcy due to medical debt. That policy they purchased to cover that $500,000 life-saving organ transplant or those 40 chemotherapy treatments that they may have to undergo if they are diagnosed with cancer.

So what do you think happens almost 100% of the time when I ask these individuals “BASIC” questions about their health insurance policy? They do not know the answers! The following is a list of 10 questions that I frequently ask a prospective health insurance client. Let’s see how many YOU can answer without looking at your policy.

1. What Insurance Company are you insured with and what is the name of your health insurance plan? (e.g. Blue Cross Blue Shield-”Basic Blue”)

2. What is your calendar year deductible and would you have to pay a separate deductible for each family member if everyone in your family became ill at the same time? (e.g. The majority of health plans have a per person yearly deductible, for example, $250, $500, $1,000, or $2,500. However, some plans will only require you to pay a 2 person maximum deductible each year, even if everyone in your family needed extensive medical care.)

3. What is your coinsurance percentage and what dollar amount (stop loss) it is based on? (e.g. A good plan with 80/20 coverage means you pay 20% of some dollar amount. This dollar amount is also known as a stop loss and can vary based on the type of policy you purchase. Stop losses can be as little as $5,000 or $10,000 or as much as $20,000 or there are some policies on the market that have NO stop loss dollar amount.)

4. What is your maximum out of pocket expense per year? (e.g. All deductibles plus all coinsurance percentages plus all applicable access fees or other fees)

5. What is the Lifetime maximum benefit the insurance company will pay if you become seriously ill and does your plan have any “per illness” maximums or caps? (e.g. Some plans may have a $5 million lifetime maximum, but may have a maximum benefit cap of $100,000 per illness. This means that you would have to develop many separate and unrelated life-threatening illnesses costing $100,000 or less to qualify for $5 million of lifetime coverage.)

6. Is your plan a schedule plan, in that it only pays a certain amount for a specific list of procedures? (e.g., Mega Life & Health & Midwest National Life, endorsed by the National Association of the Self-Employed, N.A.S.E. is known for endorsing schedule plans) 7. Does your plan have doctor co-pays and are you limited to a certain number of doctor co-pay visits per year? (e.g. Many plans have a limit of how many times you go to the doctor per year for a co-pay and, quite often the limit is 2-4 visits.)

8. Does your plan offer prescription drug coverage and if it does, do you pay a co-pay for your prescriptions or do you have to meet a separate drug deductible before you receive any benefits and/or do you just have a discount prescription card only? (e.g. Some plans offer you prescription benefits right away, other plans require that you pay a separate drug deductible before you can receive prescription medication for a co-pay. Today, many plans offer no co-pay options and only provide you with a discount prescription card that gives you a 10-20% discount on all prescription medications).

9. Does your plan have any reduction in benefits for organ transplants and if so, what is the maximum your plan will pay if you need an organ transplant? (e.g. Some plans only pay a $100,000 maximum benefit for organ transplants for a procedure that actually costs $350-$500K and this $100,000 maximum may also include reimbursement for expensive anti-rejection medications that must be taken after a transplant. If this is the case, you will often have to pay for all anti-rejection medications out of pocket).

10. Do you have to pay a separate deductible or “access fee” for each hospital admission or for each emergency room visit? (e.g. Some plans, like the Assurant Health’s “CoreMed” plan have a separate $750 hospital admission fee that you pay for the first 3 days you are in the hospital. This fee is in addition to your plan deductible. Also, many plans have benefit “caps” or “access fees” for out-patient services, such as, physical therapy, speech therapy, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, etc. Benefit “caps” could be as little as $500 for each out-patient treatment, leaving you a bill for the remaining balance. Access fees are additional fees that you pay per treatment. For example, for each outpatient chemotherapy treatment, you may be required to pay a $250 “access fee” per treatment. So for 40 chemotherapy treatments, you would have to pay 40 x $250 = $10,000. Again, these fees would be charged in addition to your plan deductible).

Now that you’ve read through the list of questions that I ask a prospective health insurance client, ask yourself how many questions you were able to answer. If you couldn’t answer all ten questions don’t be discouraged. That doesn’t mean that you are not a smart consumer. It may just mean that you dealt with a “bad” insurance agent. So how could you tell if you dealt with a “bad” insurance agent? Because a “great” insurance agent would have taken the time to help you really understand your insurance benefits. A “great” agent spends time asking YOU questions so s/he can understand your insurance needs. A “great” agent recommends health plans based on all four variables; wants, needs, risk and price. A “great” agent gives you enough information to weigh all of your options so you can make an informed purchasing decision. And lastly, a “great” agent looks out for YOUR best interest and NOT the best interest of the insurance company.

So how do you know if you have a “great” agent? Easy, if you were able to answer all 10 questions without looking at your health insurance policy, you have a “great” agent. If you were able to answer the majority of questions, you may have a “good” agent. However, if you were only able to answer a few questions, chances are you have a “bad” agent. Insurance agents are no different than any other professional. There are some insurance agents that really care about the clients they work with, and there are other agents that avoid answering questions and duck client phone calls when a message is left about unpaid claims or skyrocketing health insurance rates.

Remember, your health insurance purchase is just as important as purchasing a house or a car, if not more important. So don’t be afraid to ask your insurance agent a lot of questions to make sure that you understand what your health plan does and does not cover. If you don’t feel comfortable with the type of coverage that your agent suggests or if you think the price is too high, ask your agent if s/he can select a comparable plan so you can make a side by side comparison before you purchase. And, most importantly, read all of the “fine print” in your health plan brochure and when you receive your policy, take the time to read through your policy during your 10-day free look period.

If you can’t understand something, or aren’t quite sure what the asterisk (*) next to the benefit description really means in terms of your coverage, call your agent or contact the insurance company to ask for further clarification.

Furthermore, take the time to perform your own due diligence. For example, if you research MEGA Life and Health or the Midwest National Life insurance company, endorsed by the National Association for the Self Employed (NASE), you will find that there have been 14 class action lawsuits brought against these companies since 1995. So ask yourself, “Is this a company that I would trust to pay my health insurance claims?

Additionally, find out if your agent is a “captive” agent or an insurance “broker.” “Captive” agents can only offer ONE insurance company’s products.” Independent” agents or insurance “brokers” can offer you a variety of different insurance plans from many different insurance companies. A “captive” agent may recommend a health plan that doesn’t exactly meet your needs because that is the only plan s/he can sell. An “independent” agent or insurance “broker” can usually offer you a variety of different insurance products from many quality carriers and can often customize a plan to meet your specific insurance needs and budget.

Over the years, I have developed strong, trusting relationships with my clients because of my insurance expertise and the level of personal service that I provide. This is one of the primary reasons that I do not recommend buying health insurance on the Internet. In my opinion, there are too many variables that Internet insurance buyers do not often take into consideration. I am a firm believer that a health insurance purchase requires the level of expertise and personal attention that only an insurance professional can provide. And, since it does not cost a penny more to purchase your health insurance through an agent or broker, my advice would be to use Ebay and Amazon for your less important purchases and to use a knowledgeable, ethical and reputable independent agent or broker for one of the most important purchases you will ever make….your health insurance policy.

Lastly, if you have any concerns about an insurance company, contact your state’s Department of Insurance BEFORE you buy your policy. Your state’s Department of Insurance can tell you if the insurance company is registered in your state and can also tell you if there have been any complaints against that company that have been filed by policy holders. If you suspect that your agent is trying to sell you a fraudulent insurance policy, (e.g. you have to become a member of a union to qualify for coverage) or isn’t being honest with you, your state’s Department of Insurance can also check to see if your agent is licensed and whether or not there has ever been any disciplinary action previously taken against that agent.

In closing, I hope I have given you enough information so you can become an INFORMED insurance consumer. However, I remain convinced that the following words of wisdom still go along way: “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!” and “If you only buy on price, you get what you pay for!”
